Mission Statement:
It is the Conservation Board's responsibility to acquire, develop, maintain and make available, to the inhabitants of the county, public museums, parks, preserves, parkways, playgrounds, recreational centers, environmental educational opportunities, county forests, wildlife and other conservation areas, and to promote and preserve the health and general welfare of the people, and to encourage the orderly development and conservation of natural resources and to cultivate good citizenship by providing adequate programs of public recreation.

About the Driftless Area Education and Visitor Center
The Driftless Area Education and Visitor Center is a three level, 10,000 square foot building nestled beneath limestone bluffs with a scenic river view. This building was built with focus on the cultural, recreational, natural and historical significance of the Driftless Area. This building is also the headquarters of the Allamakee County Conservation Board.

What is the Driftless Area?
The Driftless Area encompasses 24,000 square miles, including portions of Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Also called the Paleozoic Plateau, it is one of the few regions left untouched by the last glacial period.
When glaciers carved paths across the Upper Mississippi River Valley 12,500 years ago, their paths skirted Allamakee County and the greater Driftless Area. The existing topography was preserved, and the animal and plant species of the area were mostly protected from the loss of habitat other species experienced in the surrounding areas.
An Education For All to Experience
The Driftless Area Education and Visitor Center and conservation staff provide many opportunities for learning. For the public, the conservation staff host different events and programs all throughout the year including recreational activities, library programs, etc.
The conservation staff also hosts school fieldtrips at the visitor center where students have the opportunity to learn from interpretive displays based on Native American history, flora and fauna, commercial industry, and the unique geology of the Driftless Area.
How You Can Help
The Allamakee County Conservation Foundation welcomes donations from the public. Every dollar that you donate works to support future generations access to our region's natural resources and appreciation for nature.
Your contribution can purchase equipment or materials to help improve existing parks, buy seeds or trees to improve wildlife habitat, purchase materials used in educational programs, or even help with the purchase of unique natural areas for future preservation or recreational use.
Help the ACCF improve environmental awareness among visitors and area residents. There are many ways you can be a benefactor; donate cash, securities, bequest real estate, life insurance, personal property, endowment funds, pledges, give in honor or memory of someone, or volunteer.
